Clean, Soothe, and Restore Your Inflamed Eyelids
If you wake up with crusty eyelashes, red eyelids, or a constant feeling that something is stuck in your eye, you may be dealing with blepharitis. This common, persistent condition is an inflammation of the eyelids, usually occurring where the eyelashes grow. It can affect patients
of all ages and is often associated with clogged oil glands at the base of your eyelids.
While blepharitis can be uncomfortable and unsightly, it is not contagious and rarely causes permanent damage to your eyesight. At Advanced Eye Institute, we help you manage and clear this irritating condition.
Common Symptoms of Blepharitis
- Red, swollen, or greasy-looking eyelids
- A gritty, burning, or stinging sensation in your eyes
- Crusty flakes or dandruff-like scales around the base of your eyelashes ● Itchy eyelids
- Watery eyes or a mild sticky discharge
- Sensitivity to light
What Causes Blepharitis?
Blepharitis typically occurs when the tiny oil glands (Meibomian glands) near the base of your eyelashes become clogged. This creates an environment where normal bacteria on your skin can multiply, or where tiny eyelash mites (Demodex) can thrive, causing localized irritation.
How We Help You Manage Blepharitis
Because blepharitis is a chronic condition, treatment focuses on long-term management and hygiene:
- Warm Compresses: Applying a clean, warm compress to closed eyelids helps loosen crusts and melt clogged oils in the eyelid glands.
- Eyelid Scrubs: Gently cleaning the lash line with specialized lid wipes to remove bacteria and debris.
- Prescription Treatments: If an infection is present, we may prescribe antibiotic ointments or steroid drops to calm the inflammation.
- In-Office Cleansing: We provide several custom treatment options at our Cut Off office to control symptoms and minimize the frequency of flare-ups, including our PEEQ Pro Boxes
