Strabismus

Aligning Your Eyes for Clearer, Double-Free Vision

Strabismus, commonly referred to as "crossed eyes," is a visual condition where both eyes do not align or look in the same direction at the same time. While one eye looks straight ahead, the other eye may turn inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), upward (hypertropia), or downward (hypotropia).

This condition can be constant or intermittent (appearing only when the person is tired or reading). At Advanced Eye Institute, we offer comprehensive evaluations and treatment plans to help align the eyes and improve visual coordination.

What Causes Strabismus?

Strabismus is usually caused by a lack of coordination between the eye muscles or a problem with the brain signals that control eye movement. It is often hereditary and can be associated with severe farsightedness.

Why Treatment is Critical

When eyes are misaligned, the brain receives two different visual images. To avoid double vision, the brain may begin to ignore the image from the turned eye, which can cause that eye's vision to deteriorate (a condition called amblyopia or lazy eye).

Treatment Options We Provide

  • Prescription Eyeglasses: In many cases, simply wearing correct glasses can resolve the eye turn.
  • Prism Lenses: Specialized lenses with prisms that bend light, helping to align the two images so the brain can merge them comfortably.
  • Vision Therapy: A customized program of eye exercises designed to improve brain-eye coordination and strengthen eye muscle control.
  • Surgical Coordination: If muscle surgery is required to physically align the eyes, we work closely with top local pediatric and adult strabismus surgeons to handle all pre- and post-operative care.

Improve your eye coordination and visual comfort.
